Acoustic Aging of Low-Noise Pavements

Acoustic Aging of Low-Noise Pavements

Acoustic aging refers to the gradual deterioration of the noise-reducing performance of low-noise pavements, such as porous asphalt and thin surface layers, over time. While these pavements are initially designed to reduce tire–road interaction noise by absorbing sound and dispersing air pressure, their effectiveness declines due to clogging of pores by dust, dirt, and rubber particles, surface wear, weathering, and binder hardening. This leads to a rise in noise emissions back toward conventional pavement levels.
