STMicroelectronics to boost AI at the edge with new MCU

STMicroelectronics to boost AI at the edge with new MCU Many of the highest-performance AI and ML applications are hard to access for companies that need lower cost-to-entry options or are in need of low-power options. Newer microcontrollers will need to make these AI tools available to these customers, too, in order to make AI truly ubiquitous. On December 10, STMicroelectronics announced a new microcontroller series integrating, for the first time, accelerated machine learning (ML) capabilities. This new series is designed to bring high performance features like computer vision, audio processing, and algorithmic processing to the market for even cost-sensitive, power-conscious customers. The company said the STM32N6 microcontroller (MCU) series is its most powerful to date, and the first to embed ST’s proprietary neural processing unit (NPU), the Neural-ART Accelerator, delivering 600 times more machine-learning performance than a highend STM32 MCU today. “We are on the verge of a s...

Smart Roads: Everything You Need to Know

Smart Roads: Everything You Need to Know Think of smart roads as autonomous vehicles’ (AVs) silent partner. Improving smart infrastructure on our roadways not only will help AVs navigate roads better and safer, but it will also enhance the entire transportation system’s performance. AVs are touted as safer than human-driven vehicles since most accidents are due to human error. But before AVs are market-ready, technology advances are still needed to improve the vehicles’ ability to see around obstacles such as trucks and to anticipate pedestrian and vehicle movement. For Construction Pros argues that smart roads are just as important as smart vehicles. The focus should go beyond AV technology to include upgrading the existing road infrastructure. Although some AV manufacturers don’t rely on smart roads, the publication says their development can play an important role in speeding up the adoption of AVs. What Are Smart Roads? Intel says that cities can gather data with internet-of-thin...

Quantum Sensors: Applications in Medical Imaging

Image
Quantum Sensors: Applications in Medical Imaging Quantum sensors are transforming the field of medical imaging by offering unprecedented precision and capabilities. These advanced sensors leverage the principles of quantum mechanics, such as superposition and entanglement, to achieve highly sensitive measurements that were previously unattainable. This article explores the various applications of quantum sensors in medical imaging and their potential to transform healthcare. Understanding Quantum Sensors Quantum sensors operate based on the unique properties of quantum particles. Unlike classical sensors, which rely on macroscopic properties, quantum sensors use quantum states to measure physical quantities with extreme accuracy. These sensors can detect minute changes in magnetic fields, temperature, and other parameters, making them ideal for medical imaging applications. Applications in Medical Imaging 1. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) Quantum sensors have significantly enhanced ...

China’s top EV maker BYD kicks off robotics recruitment drive for young talent

Unlocking the Power of Synthetic Aperture Radar for Geosciences Due to its unique ability to monitor Earth’s surface, Synthetic Aperture Radar plays a pivotal role in revolutionizing the geosciences. Systematic Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) monitoring of some exemplary geophysical processes and phenomena on the Earth's surface. Credit: Meng et al. [2024], Figure 1 Editors’ Vox is a blog from AGU’s Publications Department. Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) is a remote sensing technique used to observe Earth’s surface and has applications in military operations, scientific research, agriculture, and more. Compared to in situ observations, remote sensing methods such as SAR offer advantages including wide coverage, consistency, time efficiency, and cost-effectiveness. A new article in Reviews of Geophysics comprehensively explores the application of SAR in the geosciences. We asked the authors to give an overview of SAR, how it’s used in different geoscience disciplines, and how it mig...

Climate-Smart Agriculture: From Knowledge to Implementation

Image
Climate-Smart Agriculture: From Knowledge to Implementation Highlights In fiscal year 2024, climate finance amounted to 62 percent of total lending in the agriculture and food sector, in the World Bank. World Bank food- and agriculture-oriented projects approved between FY22-24 are expected to avert 174.5 million tons of CO2 emissions in their lifetime. As of fiscal year 2024, active World Bank projects in agriculture and food have supported 4.7 million farmers in adopting improved agricultural technologies. Climate-smart agriculture, which aims to achieve the triple goal of reducing emissions, increasing resilience, and boosting productivity, represents an important pathway toward low-emissions and resilient development while ensuring food security. However, the agrifood system still receives only 4.3 percent of global climate finance, and coordinating action across many stakeholders is complicated. Since the Paris Agreement, the World Bank increased its annual investment in climate-...
